AN elderly woman was mugged by "two young girls" in Garnethill in broad daylight.

William Beckett, head of the city centre community's Neighbourhood Watch, told how the two girls approached the pensioner on Tuesday afternoon, with one reportedly flashing a blade at the terrified woman.

He said that the other girl grabbed the woman's bag and fled the scene.

The girls were around 14 to 16-years-old, according to Mr Beckett. He described them as being white, with long dark hair. One was reportedly dressed in a white top and white trousers decorated with red flowers.

He urged neighbours who may have witnessed the incident, which took place in Rose  Street, close to its junction with West Graham Street at around 1pm.

Mr Beckett said he had visited the victim yesterday afternoon.

He said: "She is holding up but is a little shaken. Unfortunately, we have run out of personal attack alarms but will order more."

The neighbourhood watch provides alarms and whistles to anxious residents of the city centre area and have made repeated calls in the past for more CCTV to be installed.

He said the victim was given a whistle to be used as a theft deterrent.

A police spokeswoman said: "Detectives are investigating the robbery of a woman which took place around 1pm on Tuesday, December 1, in West Graham Street, Glasgow.

"Enquiries are continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 2995 of Tuesday, December 1, 2020."
