Two Ayr councillors won a joint award last week for their work to improve Wallacetown.

Councillor Siobhian Brown and Laura Brennan-Whitefield scooped the ‘collaborative working’ gong at the  LGIU Scotland and CCLA awards.

The pair were praised for their teamwork in organising the Wallacetown Action group.

A statement from LGIU said: “Judges admired how they utilised the existing strengths within a fragile community to build and develop skills and promote inclusive growth.”

Ayr West Councillor Brown and Ayr North Councillor Brennan-Whitefield have been working to bring new attractions to the area for youngsters.

Councillor Brown said: “We are both honoured to win this award. Wallacetown Action Group is a work in progress and it is important  that we continue to engage with the community. We have been able to allocate £240,000 from VAT refunds towards a new swing park and skatepark for the youth in the area.”

Residents can have their say about issues of concern on the Wallacetown Action Group Facebook page. The aim of the group is to improve the area and make it a better place to live.

The awards in their third year running, showcased the best of local government after a year when communities have suffered from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The winners were decided by a panel of judges composed of senior councillors and leading stakeholders from across the sector.

A record amount of nominations were received to the awards with more than 200 nominees.

Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive, LGIU Scotland, said: “I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations to Councillors Brown and Brennan-Whitefield and thank them for their commitment to local government. We look forward to hearing more about their continued accomplishments in the future.”

"These councillors showcase the best of local government, those who have gone above

and beyond to serve their communities during a hugely challenging 2020."

The awards were held at a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, November 24.
