A COMEDIAN has accused a Largs Labour councillor of 'trolling her online' and publicly asked the party to investigate his conduct.

Janey Godley called out Alex Gallagher after he posted a message on Twitter asking 'who is Janey Godley?' in response to a BBC video clip that she'd shared about memories of her childhood, including her mum who was murdered.

He also demanded to know who employs her, leading her to list the numerous organisations she works for, including the BBC.

Janey, famous for mimicking Nicola Sturgeon doing her daily coronavirus briefings on TV, has now asked Scottish Labour to look into Cllr Gallagher's posts.

As their Twitter spat escalated, Janey wrote: "I know who employs you - the public - I am a member of the public...maybe Keir Starmer and the Labour Party should have a wee word with you about trolling women online."

Janey also shared examples of Cllr Gallagher's tweets to her Facebook page, which has 200,000 followers, and said: "This is the Labour councillor who's been tweeting me for over 18 months trolling me online."

Cllr Gallagher insisted he had done nothing of the sort, writing: "All I did was not know who you are Jane. I don't know lots of people. You too I presume. Your reaction seems a bit extreme TBH."

In a communication with Scottish Labour, Janey said: "Any chance you can have a quick look at Alex Gallagher's timeline?

"He's been trolling a BBC clip about my murdered mum, asking who I am, despite tweeting me for over 18 months, now trolling me with political screenshots."

Asked to respond, Mr Gallagher said: "I have done nothing wrong - all I have asked is 'Who is Jane Godley'.

"This is a non-story as far as I am concerned.".

Janey Godley has become one of Scotland's highest profile comediennes, making regular appearances on 'Have I Got News for You' and recently appeared on ITV's This Morning programme.

She was also named Scots Speaker of the Year as part of a new celebration of the historic language.

A Labour Party spokesperson said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints extremely seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken."
