AN OUTBREAK of coronavirus has been confirmed at Cumnock's new super school.

Cases of the virus have been detected at the Robert Burns Academy, within the Barony Campus.

A track and trace operation is now underway, with a small number of pupils being contacted by NHS Ayrshire and Arran's Test and Protect team and told to self-isolate for 14 days.

The huge facility opened last month bringing pupils from both Cumnock and Auchinleck Academies on October 29.

Health bosses have ensured they are working to take every measure to protect pupils and staff at the new school.

Lynne McNiven, Joint Director of Public Health said: "NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Test & Protect team is conducting contact tracing within Robert Burns Academy in East Ayrshire Council area.

"A small number of individuals are being contacted by the Test and Protect team and told to self-isolate at home for 14 days.

"We appreciate this is a very worrying time. However, we would like to assure people that every measure is being taken to protect pupils and staff.

"To respect and maintain patient confidentiality it is not possible to release any further information at this time.

"We would like to remind people of the symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19): new persistent cough; high temperature; and / or loss of taste and smell. Anyone who develops any of these symptoms should book a test and self-isolate immediately."

Everyone in Ayrshire and Arran is reminded to remember the FACTS guidance:

F – Face coverings. These should be used in shops and on public transport (buses, trains and taxis)

A – Avoid crowded places.

C – Clean your hands frequently, using water & soap whenever possible.

T – Two metres – observe physical distancing.

S – Self-isolate and book a test if you are suffering from COVID-19 symptoms.
