East Ayrshire Councillor Elena Whitham has received the nod in her bid to become the SNP candidate for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley for the Holyrood election in 2021.
The Depute Leader of the council was officially confirmed as the party’s candidate last week having received the requisite number of signatures from local party members in support of her candidacy.
The seat is being vacated by Health Secretary, Jeane Freeman MSP, who announced in August that she would not be seeking re-election.
In comments to The National, Whitham said: “The hard work starts now”, but added: “Given the result of the latest poll, we are going into this election in a strong position.
“I think this is the parliament that will deliver independence.”
