THE First Minister has said 465 new coronavirus cases have been detected across Scotland over the last 24 hours.

This accounts for 7.9% of all people newly tested yesterday, Nicola Sturgeon said.

There have also been two deaths of patients who tested positive for coronavirus in the previous 28 days.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Sturgeon explained that 219 cases are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board area – this in part reflects a “significant cluster” in student accommodation at Glasgow University.

There were also 73 new cases in Lothian, 66 in Lanarkshire and the remaining 107 cases were spread across nine other health board areas.

The First Minister said there were 84 people in hospital with Covid-19, an increase of one on yesterday. There were 10 people in intensive care, the same figure as yesterday.

Sturgeon also said today the latest R number estimation will be published – this figure indicates the number of people each person with the virus passes it onto.

The latest estimation confirms the number is at 1 or above and could be as high 1.6, the First Minister said.
