On August 25 in 1928, Saltcoats’ first Queen of the Sea was crowned.
Saltcoats became a Burgh of Barony in 1528, allowing the town to hold weekly markets, have an annual fair, to buy and sell, to have bakers, brewers, butchers, fish sellers and craftsmen.
In 1928, Provost William D. Kerr proposed the idea of crowning a Queen of the Sea to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Saltcoats becoming a Burgh of Barony.
Netta Duff, former pupil of Ardrossan Academy, was crowned Sea Queen by the Provost’s wife on 25 August 1928 in front of a crowd of over 20,000.
The ceremony was accompanied by a procession through the town.
