A major search operation has been launched after a report of a girl in the water in Balloch.

Police Scotland said they were called at around 6.45pm on Sunday to reports of a missing person in the River Leven.

They have been joined by firefighters and members of the Coastguard as part of the ongoing rescue.

Several reports said the rescue operation involved an eight-year-old girl.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 6.46pm on Sunday, August 9 to reports of a person in the water in Balloch.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue units to the scene at Balloch Bridge.

“Firefighters currently remain on the scene working to assist their emergency service partners.”

Balloch Road and Balloch Bridge have been closed off by police.

A force spokesman said: "Officers in Dunbarton are currently dealing with an ongoing police incident near Balloch Bridge.

"Whilst enquiries are carried out the Balloch Road, between the junctions at Ben Lomond Way and Dalvait Road, is closed.

"We would ask the public to please avoid the area where possible."
