FASHION shop M&Co is to close its Girvan store as the company announce major cuts with hundreds of job losses.

Two other South Ayrshire stores have been saved, with Ayr and Troon both staying open.

The Glasgow-based retail giant announced 47 of its stores will close with the Girvan's Dalrymple Street shop amongst them.

The business appointed administrators Deloitte in April this year, the restructure is set to affect 380 jobs.

Bosses at M&Co say the coronavirus presented the company with the biggest challenge they have faced in 60 years.

M&Co’s chief executive Andy McGeoch said: “It quickly became clear that best way to save most jobs and most stores was to enter administration, with a new company acquiring the assets of the old business, and this process has now been finalised.

“Covid has been by far the biggest challenge our family business has faced in almost 60 years, and I am really pleased that we have been able to maintain a presence in over 200 communities.”

He added: ““The most difficult part of this process is undoubtedly seeing around 380 colleagues in stores and at our Glasgow and London operations leaving the business.

“It’s a terrible situation for them and I’m desperately sorry that we couldn’t come up with a viable plan which would have saved all the jobs.”
