Two Cumnock brothers are in the running for a major award for their volunteering efforts.

Ryan and Lewis McGregor, both 20-years-old, were nominated for the Sunday Mail’s Young Scot awards in the volunteering category back in April in recognition for their outstanding work in their community.

On top of being full-time students at Ayrshire College, the pair deliver weekly community participation sessions for three to 12-year-olds, volunteer for Active Schools twice a week, deliver breakfast clubs for East Ayrshire Council, run after- school sessions for Kilmarnock FC and have started a Supported Learning College Football Team, which is made up of mainly students with learning difficulties.

No strangers to adversity themselves, having been estranged from their parents as babies, the boys have thrived despite that, clocking up more than 1000 hours volunteering each and gained the prestigious Queens Award for Voluntary Service.

The celebration of young Scots was due to take place on September 7, but owing to the COVID crisis that date was scrapped and a virtual ceremony was planned instead, which will be on Thursday, August 13.

Louise Macdonald OBE, chief executive of Young Scot, said: “We’re really excited about celebrating Scotland’s most amazing young people in our first ever online Awards ceremony.

“Ryan and Lewis have gone above and beyond in their community and we can’t wait to celebrate with them at the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards next month.”
