An IRVINE teenager braved the shave to raise £1,000 for a cancer charity in memory of her grandparents.

Michaela Ferguson, 14, had her waist-length hair shaved to a skinhead on Saturday, July 4, to raise the grand sum for the Cancer Research UK charity.

And the selfless Irvine Royal Academy pupil has now reached her target in online and other donations for the shave – which was broadcast live on Facebook at 3pm.

Michaela decided to do the fundraiser in memory of both her grandparents who suffered from cancer and remembers how devastating it felt when they passed away.

After growing her long hair for years, Michaela and her mum Michelle agreed now was as good a time as any.

Proud mum Michelle said: “It went really well, she’s really bald now. She reached her target and got more than £1,000 in donations, she got there.

“We’re so proud of Michaela for actually going through with this. She’s basically just going about now in a baseball cap or a hat all the time – but she’s done the deed and it will grow back in.

“We want to thank everyone for their support, donations are still open until August 8 so if anyone wants to donate they can do.

Michelle previously said: “Both Michaela’s grandparents were diagnosed with cancer and both passed away about four years ago.

“Ever since then she’s always said she really fancies doing that to help funding for Cancer Research, but she was a bit young then but asked me every year.

“Although it happened at a young age she did experience a lot of the negativity and emotion that comes with it. So ever since then she has just basically wanted to do something that will help.”
