AN INSPIRATIONAL five-year-old has been recognised with a Sports Award for his ambitious 100 mile cycle to raise funds to help the NHS.

Little Ethan Rankin scooped an ‘Outstanding Young People Award’ at the South Ayrshire Sports Awards after he raised £5,849 to support healthcare workers on the frontline of coronvirus after being inspired by Sir Tom Moore.

The annual award event acknowledges the sporting achievement, and rewards the often unsung heroes, who give up so much of their time for the love of sport.

Due to coronavirus the awards were held with a virtual ceremony this time round as the sporting community came together via laptops, phones and tablets to hear the results.

Millie Redford was named ‘Sports Personality of the Year’, for her gymnastic achievements on the international stage representing Scotland.

In 2019 Millie became the Scottish bar champion. She has now set her sights on competing in the Commonwealth Games in 2022 The ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ went to Waiyin Hatton.

Waiyin is one of the founders of Ayrshire Sportsability, a charity established to promote, provide and encourage sporting opportunities for those with a disability in Ayrshire.

The success of the charity over the past 20 years, is down to Waiyin’s drive and passion.

Prestwick football club, Glenburn Miners Welfare FC, picked up the top prize in the ‘Provost Club Recognition Award’.

The Club raised an outstanding £2,889 which was split between two charities, after a virtual run to Wembley and back.

The funds went towards still born and neonatal death charity Ayrshire Sands, and mental health awareness cause the Kris Boyd Charity.

Heathfield Primary will also be celebrating as their gymnastics team picked up ‘Sports Team of the Year’.
