A SCAM involving fraudsters pretending to be from online service Amazon has targeted households in South Ayrshire.

Residents have reported calls from a scammer posing as an Amazon customer service agent after they recieved automated phone calls.

The fake calls are telling people that they have been charged for an Amazon Prime subscription before asking them to connect to cancel.

The council confirmed the ongoing scam and have warned residents not to share any personal information, and hang up the call.

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said: "We've received reports from local residents who are receiving automated scam phone calls, informing them that they have been charged for an Amazon Prime subscription.

"They are then told to 'press one' in order to cancel the transaction. When they do this, they are directly connected to a scammer posing as an Amazon customer service agent.

"If you receive a suspicious phone call, e-mail or text message claiming to be from Amazon or any other organisation asking for payment, personal information, or offering a refund you do not expect, do not share any personal information and disconnect the phone call immediately.

"If you are concerned that you, or someone you know, has been affected by a scam then contact our Trading Standards and Environmental Health Team on 0300 123 0900."
