A STATUE in Ayr could be removed along with a host of street names and monuments as the council consider concerns they may be celebrating racist history.

The council have said "racism and discrimination will not be tolerated in any form" after they received a number of complaints from residents.

A petition was started by former Kyle Academy pupil Kiran Trivedy for the removal of the statue of James George Smith Neill which towers over Wellington Square.

The statue was flagged up on a hit list of monuments on a UK wide campaign ‘Topple The Racists’.

Neill was infamous for the callous killing of Indian people including the execution of prisoners.

Kiran, whose family is of strong Indian heritage, was appalled to find that Neill was commemorated in such a way in his hometown.

His online petition set up yesterday, has since gathered more than 600 signatures.

The council have vowed to consult with residents across communities to decide on the most appropriate way to recognise the history of South Ayrshire.

Councillor Douglas Campbell, Leader of South Ayrshire Council said: "Concerns have been raised about a number of local statues and street names, and I’d like to reassure residents that we are taking this very seriously."

“Racism and discrimination will not be tolerated in any form, and we will carefully consider the appropriateness of these monuments, and consult with communities with regard to their future.”

Full details of the public consultation will follow.
