Police attended Princes Street after the level crossing barrier in Ardrossan failed to close.
Shortly after midday, officers received reports that the barrier had failed in the open position.
They helped members of the public to cross when appropriate until Network Rail engineers were able to fix the problem.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At 12.06pm today, police received reports that the level crossing barrier at Princes Street, Ardrossan had failed in the 'open/up' position.
"Police attended to provide a presence and crossing management when appropriate, prior to Network Rail engineers attending to rectify the fault."
