A WHISKY giant plans to build another warehouse for storing barrels in Beith after residents previously objected to building work over ‘black fungus’ fears.

A planning application to build a new triple cell bonded maturation warehouse at Chivas Bros Ltd in Beith was sent to planning chiefs last month.

The plans, which include earthworks, the formation of associated internal access roads, SuDS and landscaping was received on April 28 and validated on Monday, May 18

This comes six years after plans to build 14 maturation warehouses at the Willowyard site in Beith were approved despite objections by residents over ‘whisky fungus’ fears.

North Ayrshire Council delayed that decision to allow officers more time to collect information on the release of ethanol.

The Beith Heritage and Cultural Society (BCHS) and Councillor John Bell had previously raised concerns about the black “whisky fungus” coating their houses, blaming the release of ethanol.

Despite objections officers recommended approval of the previous plans.
