WHEN a group of friends joined forces to help key workers across Glasgow, they weren’t prepared for just what happened next.

In less than two months, start-up group Caring For Carers went from eight to more than 100 members and has now handed out thousands of support packages in the city.

Volunteers have come from all walks of life to play their part, dishing out grub to care home and hospital staff, while also offering services such as dog walking to key workers.

Founding member Josh Fields, 28, says he has been overwhelmed by the Glasgow spirit since returning to the city from America at the start of the outbreak.

He said: “We have been up and running since the start of April as group. We started off as a group of eight friends who came together to help and now we have more than 100 volunteers.

”We have handed out thousands of meals to NHS staff and key workers but we also run a request service.

“This means workers can say to us if they need support walking the dog or anything like that and we will be there.

Glasgow Times:

“I have not been living here for a bit but it really is true what they say about the Glasgow spirit.”

He added: “We have been supported by so many businesses, including New Gandhi (in Govanhill) and Opium (in the city centre) who have been brilliant with us.”

“There’s a myth about the human spirit than when push comes to shove we descend into the devils of ourselves.

“We worry people will panic and only look out for themselves, but that is not true.”

As well as Josh, the “core group” includes his sisters Lauren and Sophie and 16-year-old Martin Dover.

And while the green shoots of recovery might be in sight and lockdown is slowly being eased, Josh says they will still be here to help for as long as they are need.

He added: “We are staying active in case there is a second wave.”
