An MSP has called on people to display common sense and also respect when it comes to grocery shopping in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak.
On Sunday, several big supermarkets wrote an open letter to the nation asking for people to be considerate about the way they shop and avoid buying more than they need.
Panic buying has led to empty shelves across South Ayrshire, and Colin Smyth MSP for South Scotland said he is concerned that it could mean some older and vulnerable people, and those on tight budgets, are left without.
Colin Smyth said: “This is a very worrying time for people and I can understand that many are concerned about the coming days and months but I want to reiterate the call from the supermarkets: people need to show common sense when doing their grocery shopping.
“Please only buy what you need and think of others, a lot of people can’t afford to bulk buy and many older people are only able to carry home a small amount of goods.
“It is these individuals who are going to lose out on the items they actually need. If everyone acts in a reasonable manner and only buys the things they need, there’ll be more than enough to go around.
“I would also praise those working both in our stores and in the supply chain who are working so hard to ensure we have everything we need. But people also need to remember to show respect when dealing with supermarket staff: do not take your fear out on those who are doing their best.
“If we all show common sense and respect, we can get through this difficult time.”
