Cumnock Labour members have voted to nominate Sir Keir Starmer to become the party’s next leader.

Starmer who is the MP for Holborn and St Pancras won the endorsement of the Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley Constituency Labour Party on the first round of voting.

Members of the local party also nominated Scotland’s only Labour MP Ian Murray to become the UK party’s deputy leader.

Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy, Sir Keir Starmer and Emily Thornberry are all standing to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader while Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Richard Burgon, Dawn Butler, Ian Murray and Angela Rayner are standing for deputy leader.

All candidates for both contests were in Glasgow at the weekend for the Scottish hustings event.

The ballot for members to cast their individual vote opens on Monday, February 24, and closes at noon on Thursday, April 2, with the results being announced on Saturday, April 4.

In Scotland Cardonald councillor Matt Kerr and Jackie Baillie MSP are standing to replace Lesley Laird as Scottish Labour’s deputy leader after she lost her Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath seat in the 2019 General Election.

Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley Constituency Labour Party nominated Cllr Matt Kerr who won on the first round of voting.

The result of the contest will be announced on Friday, April 3.
