A poor cat was found with a spring trap attached to its leg in New Cumnock.

The Scottish SPCA was alerted to the incident on November 26 by a member of the public who found the cat in their garden on Mansefield Road.

A special investigations unit inspector, who cannot be named due to undercover work, said: “A spring trap is a barbaric instrument intended to kill or maim small mammals such as rats, stoats or weasels.

“These are lawful but only if used correctly.

“The trap is supposed to be contained or covered. A domestic animal, such as a cat, should not be able to be caught in one.

“The cat had the trap still attached to its leg when it was spotted. It would have caused unimaginable suffering.

“It’s lucky the cat wasn’t killed by the spring trap and was able to make its way to safety.

“We would ask anyone in the area with pets to be vigilant.

“If anyone has any information on who may have set this trap, contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
