Mindless vandals have smashed up shelters at Cumnock Bus Station.

A number of glass panels on the bus shelters were destroyed sometime between 9.30-10pm on Friday night (October 11) and police are appealing for witnesses.

Following Friday’s vandalism, a member of the public sent the Chronicle the photo on the right which shows a brick lying among shards of glass at one of the stances.

Since Friday, there have been reports of further incidents where more stances at the Tanyard station have been obliterated.

Cumnock councillors have condemned the vandalism and have been liaising with the police.

Councillor Jim McMahon told the Chronicle that although vandalism is usually rare in Cumnock, it recently “seems to have raised its ugly head”.

The councillor for Cumnock and New Cumnock added: “I think there was about 13 panels already missing.

“There are plans to demolish the bus stances but that’s absolutely no excuse.

“There’s a lot of good people in Cumnock, community groups that do a lot for the area, and it’s thrown that back in their faces. It’s absolutely disgraceful.

“There might be some CCTV footage so hopefully they can catch up with the perpetrators.”

Councillor William Crawford also expressed his disappointment over the vandalism.

He said: “I share the frustration and disappointment of the local police, the residents and the visitors of the town.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed that the incident had been reported and that officers were appealing to members of the public for information.

Anyone with any information should contact PC McClung at Cumnock Police Station on 101 quoting incident number 4643 of October 11.
