An Ochiltree schoolgirl could miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime due to a lack of support.

Last month, the Chronicle reported that 15-year-old Shannon Frew had been selected to deliver lifesaving skills as part of the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

The Police Scotland Youth Volunteer (PSYV) had hoped to tour East Ayrshire schools and deliver her own first aid program known as Save a Life.

Shannon, a qualified advanced first aider, wanted to teach schoolchildren basic lifesaving skills in a way that would meet three of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – good health and wellbeing, gender equality and good education

Shannon was hopeful that her program would be successful enough to see her selected to continue the project via the UNDP in either Malawi or Zambia. The Auchinleck Academy student has worked hard for the opportunity, having clocked up a total of 325 hours of volunteering work in just one year.

But despite setting up a Go Fund Me page to reach her £700 goal and feeling positive about the future, Shannon has been left disappointed.

She told the Chronicle: “Sadly no one has contacted me with any help or anything.

“It would be amazing, and an amazing experience if I was chosen and I get to go as I feel that it would make me change how I am even more.”

She added: “I really need the support and kindness of people to help me. I will continue to deliver this project in schools if unsuccessful as I do not want to waste this idea I have had. Please help me with anything if you can as it will be greatly appreciated.”
