A NEW Cumnock teenager is on a mission to save the planet after becoming inspired by Greta Thunberg.

Liam Armstrong, 16, is urging residents to take care of their communities by attending a climate change conference run by youngsters in the area.

The ambitious teen has even called on the support of the iconic role model Greta who rose to international fame for her environmentalist work.

Liam has been dedicated to improving his local community after being MSYP for Cumnock and Doon Valley.

Now he wants locals to may attention the Climate change after new figures found global warming is accelerating.

With carbon dioxide levels increasing, sea levels rising and ice sheets melting faster than ever, experts are warning it’s time to take action.

The warning from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) published a report showing climate change and its impacts over the past five years between 2015 and 2019, which shows it was the hottest five-year period on record.

Now Liam wants to help by bringing his local communities attention to the heated topic.

He said: “We at East Ayrshire support and strive to be Environmental Protection Champions!

“This is why we are hosting our Climate Change Conference at the end of the month.

“We are asking for Greta’s support in our cause, and make East Ayrshire a role model.”

Councillor Elena Whitham, who is also Chair of East Ayrshire Leisure, applauded Liam’s eco warrior efforts.

She said: “So proud of our young folk! In East Ayrshire we have a Children & Young People’s Cabinet and recently had a joint meeting where we agreed to hold a Climate Conference ran by our amazing youth. Greta Thunberg do you have any words of inspiration for them?”

It’s not the first time selfless Liam has used his new platform for good causes as he vowed to improve mental health in Cumnock and Doon Valley. He said: “I want to focus on mental health. In Cumnock and the surrounding areas there has been a lot of mental health problems and we need to do something about it.
