Three Towns Growers members took part in the Big Butterfly Count at their allotments in Ardrossan recently.
Suzanne Burgess of the charity Buglife talked about the different types of butterflies that can be found in gardens and allotments in Britain. Participants then fanned out around the site to catch butterflies.
Frank Clarke from Three Towns Growers said: “As well as the many white butterflies that one would expect in an allotment there were also many painted lady butterflies.
“The painted lady is a long-distance migrant, which causes the most spectacular butterfly migrations which we have observed in Britain this year. It spreads northwards from the desert fringes of North Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia, re-colonizing mainland Europe before reaching Britain.
“This year it is an abundant butterfly in Britain, frequenting gardens and allotments in late summer.”
Three Towns Growers is a horticultural and green charity based at their Community Gardens and Allotments in Elm Park.
