An Ardrossan writer has had one of her plays published.

Marie Dunlop’s second full-length play, Building Bridges, has been picked up by publishers Brown, Son and Ferguson of Glasgow.

Building Bridges is a piece of Scottish relationship drama, set among the tenements of Anderston in the 1960s.

The play was performed last year by local theatre company, Capall Dorcha, at the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine.

Marie said: “I’m really pleased about the publication of the play. As writers we naturally rely on things close to our hearts for our creations and although the characters in Building Bridges are not exact replicas of anyone, nor is the story anyone’s.

“I have picked up a lot that I heard over the years about my grandmother’s struggles and the love that my own mother gave as a gran and a mother.

“Although this is a Glasgow story, there are many strong women in North Ayrshire supporting grandchildren just like old Nellie [a character in the play] does and I think many who see the play will relate to that strength and unconditional love. So, the emotion in the play, for me, is quite personal.

“I divide my time between family, my part-time job in the homelessness sector in North Ayrshire and my writing. Building Bridges is the second full-length play I have written and has been published by Brown, Son and Ferguson of Glasgow.

“Local theatre producer, Barry Robertson, and Capall Dorcha took the play to Harbour Arts Centre last year as a rehearsed reading and I look forward to the play being picked up and performed either commercially or by an amateur company. There are a few fleeting references to Saltcoats, Irvine and West Kilbride in the play.”
