PUBS and clubs in East Ayrshire may be forced to stop selling booze or even shut if workers fail to renew crucial licences.

Staff in charge of selling booze at work could lose their personal licences if they don’t renew them this month.

Only about a third (34 per cent) of personal licence holders in the area have applied, according to figures released earlier in the month.

The deadline is May 31 for 10-year-old licences issued on or before September 1,2009.

Depute licensing clerk Stuart McCall has raised the issue with councillors at a recent council meeting.

Officially, the licences run out on August 31. But they must still be renewed by the end of this month so the council can process them.

If people miss the deadline, they won’t be able to authorise sales of alcohol, train staff, apply for occasional licences or act as the premises manager.
