SOUTH Ayrshire Council will pump a record £9.5 million into the improvement of local roads.
An estimated total of £250,000 will be used on a lighting programme across areas in South Ayrshire, meanwhile individual maintenance programmes such as resurfacing to Main Street and King Street in Ayr will cost £101,400.
One of the largest resurfacing projects will see the main street in Dailly at Bridge Mill improved at a cost of £185,250, and the village of Fisherton will benefit from resur facing works along to Lagg Farm.
Money will also be spent on footpaths, traffic signals, speed restrictions, bridge maintenance, coastal defences and ensuring energy efficient LED st re et lighting is installed.
Donald Gillies , Director – Place at South Ayrshire Council believes the huge investment will play a big role in enhancing the economy.
He said: “Our roads are one of our most valuable assets estimated at £1.09 billion so we need to look after them. They enable people to get to and from work and are vital for tourism.”
