A TEENAGE girl who was seriously injured in a horrific car crash in Glasgow's East End is "steadily improving" her family have said.

Jennifer Kennedy, 17, from Barmulloch, was left in intensive care and in a coma after being hit by a car as she walked home from college in early December.

Doctors warned the family she would "have to fight" to survive after suffering a major head injury.

Her mum Tracey, 37, and boyfriend of two years Paddy, have been taking it in turns to keeping a round-the-clock vigil at her bedside since the accident happened, near the Forge shopping centre.

Tracey spoke of her relief today, that the teenager is now making steady progress.

She is now out of danger and has been transferred from the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Her mum said she is now able to smile, eat, sit up and stand with some help, although she has not yet regained her speech. Doctors are waiting to assess the residual brain damage.

Jennifer, who has two younger brothers aged, 3 and 5, was struck as she was crossing Shettleston Road, at its junction with Duke Street, close to the Forge Shopping Centre.

The driver of the vehicle and members of the public stopped to support the teenager, while they waited for an ambulance.

Glasgow Times:

Tracey said: “She’s doing really well. It’s baby steps though. She can smile and laugh, she was watching Friends today. It’s a huge relief.

“She needs a bit of help to get up with a machine but she’s doing most of the work herself.

“The doctors are pleased with her progress.

“She’s now waiting for a bed to go to a rehab centre. The doctors haven’t checked her brain function yet but they say she is doing good.”
