A NEW comic book store is set to open in Bury.

WOW Comix, the first comic store in the borough, will open at The Rock tomorrow.

The store sells a range of new British and American comic books as well as back issues of Marvel and DC comics and others, plus memorabilia and merchandise from sci-fi and fantasy favourites.

Bury's outlet will be the third WOW Comix opened in Greater Manchester by owners John Webster and Wayne Thompson, who have two other stores in Sale and Stockport.

As part of the store's grand opening the lucky first few customers will receive a free goody bag.

Mr Webster said: "Comic books have alway been a niche interest, but the new Marvel movies, DC movies and all the TV shows have really got people interested, and it's really growing.

"There aren't many places that sell the range of things that we sell. It's a real home for collectors.

"We have boxes and boxes that people can come and rummage through and find things that pique their interest."

Mr Webster, a retired solicitor from London, opened the first WOW Comix several years ago after starting to sell comics books and other items he had accumulated over the years.

Initially selling online and at collectors events the enterprise proved so successful he and friend Mr Thompson decided to open a shop.

He said: "Comic books have been a lifelong interest for me and this sort of started with one of my colleagues Wayne.

"We worked together as lawyers for many years and shared the same sort of interests so we started this with a view to getting rid of stuff that both of us had laying around.

"I had books, records, comic books that had travelled around the country with me, and my wife was asking me why don't you get rid of them?

"I got talking to Wayne one day and we said that we would sell them online and at a comic conventions but they went really well and it became a hobby that got out of hand.

"We set up one shop and then opened a second, now Bury is our third."

WOW Comix is open daily from 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and from 11am to 3pm on Sundays.
