A FOOTBALL match at Townhead Park has raised almost £700 for Cancer Research UK.

Auchinleck Talbot supporters took on Glenafton Athletic fans at Cumnock’s ground in what is to become an annual tradition.

Organiser Craig Weir’s parents have both been affected by cancer and he was delighted with the day. He said: “It was a fantastic day although we are all still suffering.

“We’ve done a couple of things. I started organising this because my mum had breast cancer. On the day she got the all clear, my dad took her on holiday to Italy, but he fell ill with a brain tumour.

“We’ve always been Glens fans and Darren Johnson is a big Talbot fan so the two of us got together and we raised just short of £700 on the day.

“We got a lot of support from Cancer Research and Cumnock, Glenafton and Talbot were fantastic with us. Donsport also provided a ball and the trophy. We also held a coffee morning in New Cumnock Baptist Church and we raised £600 so just under £1,300 in total.

“Cancer has affected a lot of the boys, so we are going to make this a yearly event.”
