A DEPUTATION of police officers, crime prevention specialists and enforcement agents could not believe their eyes in Muirkirk last week.

They were in the area on another matter when a dog owner, in full view of the forces of the law, allowed her dog to poo on the side of the road.

Whether she thought they would be too busy too notice or if she was just dozy, she walked on without picking it up.

That was a costly decision as a high-ranking East Ayrshire Council Corporate Enforcement Unit official witnessed what had happened.

He told the Chronicle: “The owner was issued with an on-the-spot fine of £80 which rises to £100 if not paid within 28 days.

“If she refuses to pay the fine, the next step is possible prosecution and a court appearance with a maximum penalty of £500.”

Residents are encouraged to report incidents of dog fouling by calling 01563 553520 — complaints will be investigated and fixed penalty notices issued.
