A PUPIL from Barshare Primary in Cumnock won an award for leading by example in teaching road safety at the school.

Kimberly Barr was given the accolade at a special award ceremony and seminar that marked the achievements of last year’s Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) in East Ayrshire.

She won co-ordinator of the year after being nominated by the school because she is always ‘super organised and helped to make road safety cool and popular at Barshare.

In addition, Kimberly bought resources herself to ensure every child in the school could participate in activities free of charge.

Cumnock and New Cumnock councillor, Jim McMahon, presented certificates to all of the 2016 JRSOs and school co-ordinators before presenting the main awards.

Mr McMahon said: “Any money the pupils raise will be used to buy prizes for competitions and road safety resources. I can’t wait to see what the JRSOs achieve this year.”

After the formal awards the new and old JRSOs from all our schools visited road safety stalls while policeman Craig Marshall and firefighter Paul Timmons talked to the pupils about road safety and let the pupils try on their uniforms.

Michaella Mullen from East Ayrshire Leisure was also on hand to provide advice about how pupils could put on a road safety play, while GIST, the haulage company, brought an heavy goods vehicle (HGV) for pupils to sit in. The pupils loved sitting in the huge lorry and seeing road safety from an HGV driver’s point of view.
