ONE local MP reckons independence is not the way forward this time around.

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP, Corri Wilson says that the case for remaining in the EU is 'overwhelming'.

Ms Wilson said: "In the last few years, Scotland has seen higher levels of political engagement than we have in generations, and I hope to see that continue this week with as many people as possible making their voice heard in the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union.

"Many people have suggested that, as someone who supports independence for Scotland from the UK, it is odd to support continued membership of the EU. But while Westminster is focused on pulling sovereignty to it, the EU is about pooling our own sovereignty and working together. The EU is more akin to the UN than the UK, every member an independent country, all working together to tackle common challenges."

She added: "There are questions about what kind of country we want the UK, and Scotland to be – and what kind of political direction we want to take. When it comes to decisions on employment law, on human rights, I believe the case for continued membership is simply overwhelming. The alternative is to hand these powers over to an increasingly right wing Conservative party, who have already proved their contempt for low paid workers and their trade unions, the disabled and those struggling to find jobs.

"Scotland benefits enormously from the EU. Membership of the world’s largest single market helps to create jobs and investment and the freedom of movement enables Scots to travel, work and study across the EU and allows skilled EU migrants to work in our NHS and other vital sectors.

"It’s these progressive benefits of EU membership which I firmly believe people in Scotland want to see continue but, no matter which side of the debate you come down on, I urge everyone who has a vote, to use it on Thursday."
