DO you know a local hero who could help bring the Commonwealth Baton Relay through East Ayrshire?

The big countdown to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has begun with the Queen’s Baton Relay beginning its epic journey from Buckingham Palace through the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

It will reach East Ayrshire on Saturday, June 21 as it nears the end of its route to the much anticipated Games.

Though the final route is still to be confirmed, it is expected that the baton will visit a number of towns and villages throughout East Ayrshire.

And the organiser’s are looking for nominations for local heroes to help the baton on its journey.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council said: “The Council is now seeking nominations for the East Ayrshire leg of the relay. We need you to think carefully about the people in your lives and communities who inspire you, who work hard for the benefit of others or who are a mentor for young people through sport.” Nominated baton bearers will need to meet one, or more, of the following criteria: * made a positive contribution to the lives of others through community sport * undertaken voluntary work or contributed to schools or youth organisations * contributed towards greater inclusion for disadvantaged or marginalised sectors of the community * been a role model or mentor to youth through sport * displayed a level of individual achievement against the odds * made a significant contribution to their local community Local MP Sandra Osborne added: “You don’t have to wait until the Opening Ceremony to start the celebrations. The Queen’s Baton Relay has already begun its epic journey through the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

“It won’t be too long before the baton returns to Scotland – and local volunteers are needed to be a part of its final journey.

“We can be proud that each country it passes through will be presented with a gift of the detachable granite gemstone tip from the Ailsa Craig.” To nominate a community baton bearer complete the nomination form here – www.glasgow2014.com/nominations/nominator All completed applications must be received by 5pm on Friday, November 22.
