A touch of Stardust
I DIDN'T know what to expect as I made my way to the Clyde Riviera for this one night stand, sponsored by our sister paper the Largs and Millport Weekly News.
My memories of Alvin Stardust, the 70s singing sensation, were somewhat sketchy. Of course, I remembered 'My Coo-cachoo' (Bless you!) but could not for the life of me recall any other songs that the leather-clad lad belted out to teeny-boppers in the days when we still had 'Top of the Pops' on the telly.
Perhaps that was a good thing, nostalgia not being what it used to be. So let me just say this right now and you can get the mocking guffaws out of the way, Alvin was terrific. I don't know how old he is now but he's looking good and he can still strut like a young 'un.
The support act, The Train Wreckers, set the bar high for the veteran rocker.
Claiming to be from Louisville, Kentucky the quartet rocked through a fine selection of rock, rockabilly and any other kind of rock covers with style and panache.
However, I suspect the closest they come to Kentucky is a convivial glass of Jim Beam. Or two. You can make your mind up when they play the Cumnock Carnival this year.
Alvin rose to their challenge however, belting out a selection of his hits - incoluding 'My Coo-cachoo (Gazundheit!) - and rock covers.
And the audience, including the Cumnock contingent, loved every minute of it.
