Monsters - DVD Review
Less is more.
With Jaws the horror is all in your imagination. You barely see the shark. Monsters does the same - only they pay off isn't a rubber shark.
But with Jaws it was unintentional. The bloody shark looked god awful and the salt water rusted the mechanics.
Monsters certainly has no problem with it's special effects. It's probably kept to a minimum because of the shoe string budget.
It's pretty impressive CGI for being made in some guys bedroom. Far superior to the rubbish you'll find late at night on SyFy or the horror channel.
The films just seems to happen and end as abruptly as it started. Perhaps because the cast and crew were chancing their arms filming where they shouldn't.
The two unknown actors, Scoot - yes that's his real name - McNairy plays cynical photographer Andrew Kaulder who is forced to escort his boss's daughter Samantha Wynden, played by Whitney Able back across the American border.
The pair are caught up in the migration zone of huge squid-like aliens that hitched a ride to earth on a NASA probe which crash landed on the Mexico border.
Ultimately this is a love story come road movie. With superb actors, amazing special effects and a sublime score but could sometimes do with a compass.
Monsters is available now.
