The Scottish Chamber Orchestra will welcome in 2012 in true Viennese style, with an uplifting programme of waltzes and polkas in Ayr Town Hall on 4 January.

Popular guest conductor Nicholas McGegan, who was a hit with Ayr audiences when he conducted the SCO's New Year performance in 2008, returns with a traditional programme featuring some of the best loved music from the Strauss Family.

A Night in Old Vienna features popular classics including The Blue Danube, Champagne Polka and the Radetzy March.

Acclaimed young soprano Elena Xanthoudakis, a recipient of a 2011 Borletti-Buitoni Award and already a regular at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, makes her SCO debut with this concert. She performs arias from Viennese operetta, including Lehár's The Merry Widow and The Laughing Song from Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus

SCO Chief Executive Roy McEwan said: "There's no better way for the SCO to welcome in the New Year than by bringing this lovely music to our audiences.

"It is a great pleasure to welcome back Nicholas McGegan this year and we are delighted to be joined by the rising Australian star, soprano Elena Xanthoudakis. We also look forward to returning to Ayr Town Hall."
