ADAM HALL entered the record books as he completed a clean sweep of age group title trebles in winning all three of his Under 19 events at the Scottish National Junior Championships in Motherwell.

The Mauchline badminton player won the singles, boys’ doubles and mixed doubles to add to the title hat-tricks he has won previously at Under 13, 15 and 17 level. He also scooped singles and boys’ doubles titles at Under 11, which does not feature mixed doubles.

Top seed Adam was taken all the way in the singles final before defeating Motherwell’s second seed and doubles partner Alex Dunn 19-21 21-7 21-13 at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

Then defending champion Hall teamed up with Dunn to take the doubles when the top seeds defeated second seeds Sean Leith (Stonehaven) and Jack Stevenson (Glasgow) 21-17 21-7.

Hall and Dunn were face to face again in the last final when Hall, who won the title last year with Edinburgh’s Heather MacPherson, teamed up with her sister Julie to defeat Dunn and Mauchline’s Holly Newall 21-17 21-13.

MacPherson has also checked Newall’s title defence in the singles when the second seed defeated the top seed 22-20 11-21 21-19 in a closely-contested final.

And Newall went home empty handed, having also missed out in the girls’ doubles when she and Sarah Findlay lost to unseeded Motherwell sisters Hannah and Sophie Morrison 29-27 16-21 21-17 in the final as they produced the second upset of the day.

Adam said: “It’s a really good achievement. It’s surreal, I never thought ten years ago that I would win everything that I have, I just didn’t think that would happen.

“When you look back at some of the great players who never achieved what I have it’s just surreal.

Adam has now won 27 junior national titles and is looking to continue picking up titles when he goes senior.

He said: “The next level up for me is senior. I know I can compete with the best Scottish players at senior level, but across Europe it’s much harder to do that. Hopefully, though, in a couple of years I will be competing with the best.” Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, praised all the competitors for their efforts in a tournament attracting nearly 100 entries from all over Scotland.

She said: “Once again we have seen some real talent on court here at Ravenscraig this weekend and I am sure many of these young prospects have a bright badminton future ahead of them. I would like to offer my personal congratulations to Adam for his achievements in the last few years at our Age Group National Championships.”
