HOLLY Newall helped Scotland win the Scotland’s UK School Badminton Games - before cleaning up in the individual events.

The Mauchline teenager helped her country win all three of their group matches, claiming gold with a 3-2 win over England that couldn’t have been closer.

Alex Dunn and Holly won their singles matches to give Scotland a 2-1 lead, after Callum Atterbury and Rachel Lu had been edged out in the opening mixed doubles.

England’s Callum Hemming and Johnnie Torjussen levelled the match at 2-2 by beating Dunn and Matthew Duguid 21-17 15-21 21-10 in the boys’ doubles.

But Holly and Eleanor O’Donnell took the deciding girls’ doubles with a 21-16 16-21 23-21 win over Fee Teng Liew and Lizzie Tolman to claim gold for Scotland.

Newall continued her fine form into the individual events where she won a hat-trick of gold medals.

A 21-13 21-17 win over England’s Abigail Holden secured the girls’ singles and she once again teamed up with O’Donnell to beat Liew and Tolman in the girls’ doubles.

Newall secured her treble in the mixed, partnering Dunn to a 21-18 21-18 win over Hemming and Tolman.

Head Coach and Team Manager Karen Stalker was delighted with the performance: “All our players were absolutely amazing this weekend. They operated really well as a team and they were great ambassadors for Scotland.

“They have trained well over the summer and are in great shape physically, but I was also impressed with their maturity and professional attitude.

“They were a pleasure to work with and they deserve their success.”
