AT THE RACES: Music Festival, trained by Jim Goldie, edged to victory in the Tennent's Lager Handicap on Wednesday.
MAKE mine a double! That could have been the catchphrase at Ayr Racecourse's two day August meeting last week when a number of jockeys and trainers notched two winners apiece.
Robert Winston, PJ McDonald, Joe Fanning, Paul Hanagan and Tom Eaves were the jockeys in double form while trainers Jim Goldie, Richard Fahey and Alistair Whillans also recorded two winners over the meeting.
The easiest winners of the two days were the Whillans pair Scrapper Smith (13/2) under PJ McDonald in the Wallaces Express Handicap on Wednesday and Social Rhythm (4/1 jt fav) ridden by Garry Whillans in the final race on Thursday - the Bet Live At victorchandler.com Apprentice Handicap who won their races by eight and six lengths respectively.
PJ completed his double on Northside Prince (7/2 fav)in the Whyte & Mackay Handicap.
Joe Fanning is the most experienced rider on the northern circuit and he showed all his guile in steering the Jim Goldie trained Music Festival (7/1) to land the Tennent's Lager Handicap on Wednesday by a neck from Monte Mayor One. The Fanning double was completed in the final race on Wednesday onboard the Mark Johnston runner Tobernea in the Kopparberg Handicap.
The second Goldie winner of the meeting came courtesy of Grand Diamond in the Gordon Scott's 60th Birthday Handicap on Thursday. The 5/1 shot was given a great ride by young apprentice Neil Farley to win by half a length from Vernoon (9/2 jt fav).
Paul Hanagan rarely leaves an Ayr fixture without riding a winner and he grabbed one on both days - Arabian Spirit (5/1 jt fav) in the Smirnoff Vodka Handicap on Wednesday and Intrusion (5/4 jt fav) in the opener on Thursday - the victorchandler.com Maiden Auction Stakes - both for his guv'nor Richard Fahey.
The Robert Winston double on the opening day came on Man Of The Match (evens fav) in the EBF/Coca Cola Maiden Stakes for Alan Bailey and El Dececy (9/4 fav) in the Coors Light Handicap trained by John Balding.
And on Thursday it was Tom Eaves who booted home two winners in the Kevin Ryan trained Fleet Captain (5/1) in the Senate Electrical Nursery Handicap and Zomerlust (6/1) in the Patrick Dromgoole of Penkill 80th Birthday Handicap.
Ayr's next meeting is the William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup Festival from Thursday September 16 until Saturday September 18.
