NEW Cumnock boss John McKeown got his first win at the second attempt as his side negotiated their way into the third round of the Scottish Cup.

Nock hosted Aberdeen-based Newmachar United on Saturday and secured a 3-1 victory thanks to a Chris McKnight goal and a brace from Ryan Nisbet - despite going behind early on.

McKeown was just happy to pick up his first win as Nock gaffer following his side’s derby day horror show last weekend.

He said “A win is a win. We had plenty of chances in the game and were unlucky that it wasn’t more than three. We’re just happy to be in the draw for the next round.

“This was a potential banana skin for us. They were big underdogs and everyone expected us to win but we were happy to get the goals, especially after going one down, and get the win.

“I enjoyed it, apart from the first 10 minutes where we lost the goal.” McKeown has stamped his mark on his new side, shoring up the back line with the addition of two new centre halves.

McKeown handed a debut to central defender Raymond Buchanan who arrived on loan from Whitletts Victoria last week.

Buchanan, who re-joined Vics’ from East Stirling last season, joins the Townhead Park side on a season long loan deal with Cumnock having an option to buy the player at the end of the season.

McKeown has also acted quickly to tie up a deal for Rutherglen Glencairn stopper Stephen Low who looks set to make his competitive debut for Nock on Saturday when they entertain Beith in Super League Premier Division action after playing in a friendly on Monday night.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Low said: “I’m delighted to have joined Cumnock. I’ve known John just through the junior game, having played in the juniors for the last eight years now.

“For the last three years football has almost taken a back seat for me as I’ve started a family, so I’ve been playing with Rutherglen. I’m just glad to be back playing in the Super League and can’t wait for my first game.” Low was the skipper for both Celtic and Scotland from under 16 to under 20 and has had stints at Shotts Bon Accord and with Elgin.

He added: “John was a big pull for me. He got the job and when he came in for me it was easy to say yes. Just coming to a club like Cumnock and getting back in to the Super League is a big pull, not to mention playing in the derby games where they get huge crowds. I know we lost heavily last week to Auchinleck but that spurs you on to come here and try and do better.” Cumnock take on Beith at Townhead Park on Saturday with a 2pm kick off.
