RAY Montgomerie was the hero as his bicycle-kick fired Cumnock into the quarter-finals of the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup at Victoria Park.

Nock came from one down to beat Irvine Victoria 2-1 with Montgomerie bagging the winner after Paul Burns had equalised from the spot.

And the midfielder was delighted with his super finish against the First Division side.

Montgomerie told the Chronicle: “I was in the right place at the right time. It was probably one of my better finishes. I’ve been doing not bad recently and scored a couple of goals.

“The game went not bad. I thought in the first half we were a bit sloppy. At the beginning of the second half I thought we came into the game a bit better we got the ball down and knocked it down a bit better. We eventually got the second goal and won.

“Obviously you want to try and win the Ayrshire and the West [of Scotland Cup] and kick on from there. We’ve got Girvan next, and Rob Roy in the West as well and it’s two difficult games. They’re both at Townhead Park and I think we play better on the better surface.”
