THERE needs to be a change in mentality at Cumnock according to boss John McKeown.

The Nock gaffer watched his side lose an agonising last minute goal that saw Talbot deny them a West of Scotland Cup final spot.

Despite running the Premier Division league leaders close it was Nock's third defeat to Talbot this season and despite significant progress, McKeown says his side must change their mentality if they want to compete with the Ayrshire giants.

Speaking to the Chronicle following Saturdays defeat, McKeown said: "It was a really hard one to take. It was a sore one to lose it that way and we need to learn not to drop so deep towards the end of tough games like that."

The Townhead boss added: "We're pleased with the progress that we have made this season but we need more than that. It's all good and well performing well and running them close. But there comes a point when that's not enough. We need to try and stop thinking like that. Talbot are a good team, but we can't keep using the same excuses. We need to start getting results against the big clubs like Talbot."

Meanwhile, Talbot goal hero, Mark Shankland admits his last gasp winner was a relief to the Beechwood team as he scored a sweet winner.

He said: "I took a wee gamble late on and it paid off and I managed to get the goal.

"It was brilliant to be the one to score. Because it has put us in the final and the way we did it made it just mad it a sweet goal.

"The boys were just relieved to get the win and go to another cup final more than anything after.

"We've played Cumnock three times this season now and we've won all three of them, but that was definitely the toughest game I've played against them."

Both Talbot have tricky league fixtures this weekend as Talbot host Pollok whilst Cumnock travel to play Bellshill.
