AUCHINLECK bowler Claire Johnston has been selected to represent Scotland at this year’s World Championships in New Zealand.

She was named in the 10-strong squad which will carry the country’s hopes of qualifying for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

With memories of the 2014 Glasgow games and the hopes for the forthcoming Gold Coast games in their minds, Claire and her team-mates will head to Christchurch in November.

They will contest the championships, between November 27 and December 12, joined by head coach David Gourlay and a group of highly experienced support staff.

Rhona Howie of Bowls Scotland said: “ We are delighted to announce a strong field of players to compete at World Bowls. This is a fantastic opportunity for the players to challenge for the medal podium and compete on the world stage.

“There will be some challenging conditions in Christchurch for the players but we are convinced that the players who have been selected will manage these challenges in a professional manner and compete to the best of their ability for their country”

In total, the squad have enjoyed a successful year leading into the World Championships, taking home seven medals between them at the Atlantic Rim Championships in Cyprus.

This enables their qualification in all disciplines for New Zealand, from where they brought home three medals from the Six Nations competition earlier this year.

Claire Johnston will take part in the ladies triples with Julie Forrest and Stacey McDougall, while the trio will be joined by Lauren Baillie for the ladies fours.
