The Bunnets have gone from the brink of extinction at the tail end of last season. The serious doubts over the clubs future seems to now be at the back of most Lugar fans minds after they sealed a sensational win over Cumnock in the league cup last week. They now sit joint top of the group alongside Glenafton and Scottish Cup holders Talbot.

The Bunnets were held to a 3-3 draw with Muirkirk on Saturday but boss Graeme Neil can’t wait for his sides league schedule to get underway.

He guided his young side to a memorable win over Nock at Rosebank Park last Wednesday, but he has insisted the league opener against Girvan is where he will see where his squad really is.

Speaking of his sides victory last week, Neil said: “We were delighted. Early doors Cumnock battered us but our young lads have done great. Top be honest they have probably been better than we expected. We were disappointed with Saturday.

“We’ve got to take all of the positives out of the League Cup. We’ve picked up seven points out of nine and that is probably more than we could have hoped for. We’ve got difficult games against Glenafton and Talbot next and I think they kind of games take care of themselves.” Neil is still on the lookout for more players, with a striker and possibly one other in mind before the league campaign starts on August 29.

Neil added: “The Girvan and Whitletts games will tell us where we are at the moment. We play Girvan, Saltcoats Vics and Whitletts in our first three games and the last thing we want to do is to play catch up to them. The attitude of the squad have been great so far and we are very happy with how far we have come in a short space of time. Cumnock were a good side and I think they will win that league this year so it was a really good result for us. It probably raised the profile of Lugar beating them. It maybe opens up a few more option in ternms of brinig players in. Some players may not have been so sure about listening to us but a win against a team like Cumnock could turn a few heads in our direction.

“There’s a buzz about the dressing room now and the first game against Girvan is where it really starts for us.” Lugar first have difficult games away to Glens on Wednesday night and at home to Talbot on Saturday.
