CUMNOCK rugby star Mark Bennett has been chosen for the Scotland squad competing in the Commonwealth Games.

The former St John’s pupil is just one of 12 Rugby Sevens players called up to represent Team Scotland in the eagerly anticipated summer event.

The Rugby Sevens event is expected to attract bumper crowds to Ibrox on July 26 and 27 and the Scots will share a group with New Zealand, Canada and Barbados.

Mark is the youngest member of the squad and helped Scotland win the Bowl in Hong Kong in March. He is currently with the Warriors and has won two world Series caps and scored seven tries. He also won the Scottish Cup during his time with Ayr and is considered a very bright young prospect in the game.

The 21-year-old said: “This will be a career highlight for me, representing Scotland in the Commonwealth Games and hopefully we can bring back a medal of some kind, we certainly have a squad which should be capable of challenging.”
