Scottish construction, environmental and quarrying group Barr has been unveiled as the main sponsor for the junior football season finale, the Scottish Junior Cup final.

This year’s showcase match between Glenafton Athletic and Hurlford United takes place at Kilmarnock FC’s Rugby Park stadium on June 1.

Barr has over 100 years of experience and has established a strong reputation and base not only within Ayrshire but across the UK.

With two Ayrshire teams contesting this year’s final, Barr seized the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the local communities it serves.

Barr director Barclay Chalmers said: “Given the company’s traditional home is in Ayrshire, this year’s all-Ayrshire final provides a good fit for Barr to provide its backing to the event.

“Junior football has a tremendous following in Ayrshire and the west coast of Scotland generally and we do a huge amount of work in these communities, as well as being a significant employer.

“We see this as a fantastic opportunity to support grassroots football, as well as align ourselves with this prestigious and historic tournament.” Barr has a strong relationship with sport, having delivered a string of high profile sporting facilities through its Barr Construction division. Recent projects have included the redevelopment of Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, which will host the swimming events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Scotstoun Athletics Stadium in Glasgow and the St Mirren FC stadium.

In addition, Barr’s Environmental and Quarries divisions operate a number of facilities across Ayrshire, creating employment for hundreds of people across the region. Barr Environmental provides a range of waste management, waste treatment, recycling and skip hire services. Barr Quarries supply heavy side construction materials such as aggregate and ready mix concrete to a number of infrastructure clients and projects across south west Scotland.

The Scottish Junior Cup is one of the game’s oldest competitions and the first final dates back to 1887, which was won by Fairfield Govan.

The current holders also hail from Ayrshire, with Auchinleck Talbot lifting the trophy in 2013 after defeating Linlithgow Rose 1-0 in last year’s final.

This year’s final will gain national exposure by being shown live on Gaelic channel BBC Alba.

Tom Johnston, secretary of the Scottish Junior FA, said: “The Scottish Junior Cup is recognised as one of the best known football competitions in the country and it is a tremendous endorsement to be supported by a fantastic Scottish company like Barr.

“To be associated with a company so closely identified with both Ayrshire and with the delivery of sport and leisure facilities is greatly appreciated.”
