PLANS for a new supermarket on the site of the Glaisnock Shopping Centre have fallen throught he Chronicle can reveal.

Discount supermarket chain Aldi have now pulled the plug on plans for a proposed Cumnock store.

The Chronicle reported back in March 2014 how the Glaisnock Shopping Centre is set to be demolished. It was revealed that and in its place would be a brand-new Aldi store, which would create around 30 jobs, while Farmfoods looked set to expand to take up the rest of the space left behind by the old building.

Seven modern shopping units - which will be built with slate roofs and bricks similar to those used at Knockroon - will be created in a new retail area on Townhead Street with work getting under way next month.

The council is now attempting to work with Farmfoods as well as the current occupants of the shopping centre units.

East Ayrshire Council Legal Manager, Stuart McCall said: “East Ayrshire Council can confirm that Aldi has withdrawn their interest in the town centre site on the basis that their requirements, and that of Farmfoods, cannot be accommodated.

“However the Council is continuing to working with Farmfoods to identify a resolution and matters are also being progressed with all the other owner occupiers.” “Construction will start on the new row of shops in Townhead Street next month and the appointed contractor for this project is Ashleigh Construction. It is expected that three of the owners will be taking up new units as well as potentially two of the existing tenants.” The existing businesses in the shopping centre will get priority and will be available for lease or sale to other retailers.
