Staged by the Ayrshire Association of Burns at Doon Academy, nine of them were joined by former-pupil Demi Ferrans who is now in S1 at Cumnock Academy and teacher and coach Mrs McNulty, with Lauren Edgar earning first place in the P6/7 poetry section for her recitation of Willie Wastle.

Participating in the P4/5 poetry were Madison Brown, Cali Campbell and Kieran Ferrans. P6/7 competitors were Charli Mason, Kaylin Hastie and Lauren Edgar, while in the singing competition within the P4/5 section were Cali Campbell, Olivia Cameron, and Ciara Boyd competed in the P4/5 section and Lauren Edgar, Lillie Ritchie and Kaylin Hastie at P6/7 level.

In the singing competition, competing within the P4/5 section were Cali Campbell, Olivia Cameron, and Ciara Boyd. In the P6/7 section, competitors from the school were Lauren Edgar, Lillie Ritchie and Kaylin Hastie.

Again, the children represented the school tremendously with their beautiful singing, while Demi Ferrans participated in the poetry recitations for S1/2.

Five pupils received awarded recognition at the competition. Ciara Boyd gained second place in the P4/5 singing section with Ye Banks and Braes. Cali Campbell gained third place in the P4/5 verse speaking by reciting Burns’ poem Tam Glen, and in the same category Kieran Ferrans was awarded second place with traditional favourite Address to a Haggis.

Demi Ferrans was awarded first place in the S1/2 category for her rendition of The Braw Wooer — Ciara, Kieran, Lauren and Demi were subsequently invited to represent Ayrshire and compete at the national schools competition at Hutchesons’ Grammar School in Glasgow.

A spokeswoman for the school said: “The standard of competition was extremely high and all children did an excellent job of representing the school with their recitations and beautiful singing.
