They show the cost of childcare has soared, with families spending £1,533 more this year than they did in 2010 while wages have remained largely static. On top of this, there are over 40,000 fewer childcare places, according to the Family and Childcare Trust’s new Annual Childcare Cost Survey.

It confirms that, not only have childcare costs continued to rise, but that the current system is just too complex.

Ms Osborne said: "In East Ayrshire, the report has shown that there are fewer childcare places per head of the population than many other areas. "Figures also show that demand for childcare is lower because many parents struggle to pay for the soaring costs.

"Childcare providers may also have difficulty making enough money to stay in business. "Care Inspectorate statistics indicate a particular shortage of after school and holiday childcare in East Ayrshire.

"These figures are worrying and go to show that working families are being badly let down by the Government. A review of childcare funding and a system that delivers for children, their parents and providers is long overdue."
